The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is largely known as the birthplace of "bikepacking". It is to this day, one of the longest and most arduous bikepacking routes in the world, stretching 3,100 miles from Canada to Mexico, following the Continental Divide through the Rocky Mountains. The route is comprised mainly of gravel roads, with over 90% of it being unpaved, including stretches of singletrack mountain bike paths.
The Adventure Cycling Association describes it as follows "This route is defined by the word 'remote.' Its remoteness equates with spectacular terrain and scenery. The entire route is basically dirt-road and mountain-pass riding every day. In total, it has over 200,000 feet of elevation gain".
I biked the route with one companion, Aaron, for its entirety, starting August 23, 2021 and ending on October 23, 2021. And oh boy do we have some stories. From bear encounters, to snowstorms, from beautiful wooded mountain peaks to red clay deserts, we had an adventure we will never forget.
